Perin and Ralli Jacob studied commercial arts at the J J School of Art, Mumbai. They had very successful careers as graphic designers in the Mumbai advertising industry. Perin took basic pottery lessons from Premila Pandit and gradually began to concentrate more in her pottery studio. By 1969, she was a full-time practicing studio potter. Ralli supported her and himself began to ‘do’ pottery in 1972. In 1975, they gave up the advertising world, moving to the greener Alibag area in village Dhokavade across the Mumbai harbour and establishing Ceramic Expressions, their first business venture, later renamed Good Earth, a professional clay studio. Along with Somashekhar, a highly skilled traditional potter from Karnataka, who replicates the designs that Perin and Ralli make and with trained local girls assisting in the basic clay work, Good Earth has created utility ware that graces restaurants of the Taj Group of Hotels, and produces designer pottery, urns, tableware and large pots for premium lifestyle store chains in India. Good Earth also executes large murals for architectural interiors. In addition to a superb production line, Perin and Ralli Jacob regularly participate in exhibitions, hold workshops to train young potters and organize programmes with reputed Indian and international ceramicists and studio potters. In recent years, Ralli Jacob has also been working with glass, using the basic infrastructure of their studio to slump, stretch and twist castaway bottles, converting them into functional as well as sculptural objets d’art.
Perin and Ralli Jacob live and work in Dhokavade, Alibaug, Maharashtra.
