Mandala Pottery was founded in 1994 by Chinmayi, in the Dana Community of Auroville. Soon after, Krishnamurthy and Anamika joined in. Mandala Pottery undertook orders for tableware, developing a signature style. Adil Writer joined the group in 2001 and introduced architectural ceramics as a product line. Mandala now undertakes commissions for myriad wall panels, tiles and murals. The ceramics are fired in gas kilns, sometimes using smoke-firing techniques and Raku. The four ceramists are assisted by helpers but as Anamika puts it, “The chemistry of our people is far subtler than the chemistry of the glazes, clay bodies or colours and it matters to us that we remain a small enterprise.” Mandala Pottery has grown steadily over the years and established a name for itself.
