Born in 1913, Homai Vyarawalla taught herself photography with useful tips from photographer-husband, Manekshaw. India’s first woman photo-journalist, her photographs have appeared in Onlooker, Illustrated Weekly of India, and several other newspapers and magazines. Her life’s work has now been documented in the sumptuously produced India in Focus: The Camera Chronicles of Homai Vyarawalla, by Sabina Gadihoke and published by Parzor, a UNESCO project, featuring most of the stunning photographs taken by her during the tumultuous 1940-1970 era of pre- and post-Independence India. She lives in Baroda.
